Washington, D.C., wind gusts: Faces of wind chill

Walking outdoors on Monday felt like being tied to the handlebars of Satan's dirt bike and ridden around the 2010 Ninth Circle of Hell Motocross. The wind was blasting, relentless and rife with road sand and plant debris that stung exposed flesh like a pea-shooter minigun.

It was a windfest, people. Washington, D.C., and the surrounding counties were under a wind advisory until nighttime, with gusts of up to 53 m.p.h. blowing the stuffing out of everything that wasn't nailed down. Wind chill made it feel like the single digits during the evening. To get a bead on how folks were handling this heavenly buffeting, I headed to the most exposed, windiest place I could think of short of the bell tower of the National Cathedral.

After the Washington D.C. snow comes the bitter cold

The snow in our area is essentially over with some lingering flurries, but as the storm continues to get stronger south of New England the winds and cold will be the story for us on Monday. The edge of the snowstorm really brushed us with 2 to 5 inches across southern Maryland, while the Eastern Shore continues to see heavy drifting snow of more than 1 foot in some spots. Travel tomorrow up I-95 will be hazardous toward New Jersey and on into New England where a blizzard will continue.
